Yemen (November/December, 2010) THE 20th ARABIAN GULF CUP The potential of a successful sporting event to empower a Nation, promote good will and economic stimulation, was resoundingly demonstrated by the Gulf 20 Cup of Nations, held during November and December in Aden and Abyan. This was the first time, since the inception of the Tournament, 20 years ago, that it had been held in Yemen, inspiring a tremendous amount of excitement and pride for the Yemeni people. The final match between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, attended by 50,000 people, delivered a suspenseful 120-minute game with a narrow victory by the Kuwaiti team with a score of 1-0. The entire tournament was conducted with great enthusiasm and the utmost sportsmanship. Such an event renders a social, human and economic value to the people and image of Yemen that is beyond calculation, helping to bring it one step closer to economic redemption and full membership in the GCC. |
